Classical Pilates is a form of exercise, which was developed early last century by Joseph H. Pilates (1880 - 1967). He devised this exercise system, which moves the body through a broad range of movement on the mat and on special apparatus, to help the body find health and balance. Classical Pilates is a movement system made up of exercises, which are performed in a sequenced order and should be executed with a specific rhythm and dynamics. Although, only a small number of repetitions are required, the quality of each movement is key.
Classical Pilates has many benefits. It is a holistic movement system, which teaches functional movement. Functional movement is important when one moves furniture, picks up the morning newspaper, or plays with the dog. Functional exercise improves a person’s health and vitality.
Since Pilates is a functional form of exercise, it improves posture, and provides stimulation to all of the organs in the human body, which makes the body as a whole healthier. Additional benefits include: enhanced support of the respiratory system, increased circulation, decreased pain, improved flexibility, a general feeling of over-all well-being, and increased self esteem.
Pilates tones and uses all the muscles of the body synergistically. One of the most important focuses is on the abdominals, or the Powerhouse, as Joe Pilates called it. The Powerhouse can be defined as a “four inch band in and around the center supported by the inner thighs and seat.”. Pilates also focuses on the muscles which depress the shoulder blades. The activation of all of these muscles creates more stability in the body, therefore, strengthening the body and increasing mobility.
Pilates is considered a mind-body form of exercise. In one of Joseph Pilates famous quotes he states, “Not mind or body, but mind and body”. He developed Pilates based on six principles, which brings the mind-body aspect of it to life: Concentration, Control, Centering, Precision, Flowing movement, and Breath. During each session one must concentrate and feel the movements being initiated from the center (the Powerhouse). There is a continuous focus on controlling each movement with precision while at the same time maintaining flowing movement. Additionally, movements are supported by the breath, which is the vital link for a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Private Sessions allow
you to experience Pilates the way it was designed to be taught - one
on one. The Pilates System is adaptable to every body, and a private
session accelerates progression and maximizes the benefit to the body. During
your private session your instructor will craft a method that is
personalized and pertinent for you. Your instructor's expert eye and
experienced touch will facilitate growth faster than is possible in a
group setting. Ideally, every Pilates student benefits from at least
one private session a week to guarantee and facilitate progress and
change.
Duet Sessions
allow you to share the session with a friend or loved one and learn the
Pilates method together. Making a commitment with another person can
help keep you on track and also create a fun way to share time as you
work toward individual goals. As part of a duet you receive more
personalized attention than in a group session, have the opportunity to
work more on your individual needs, and have the ability to schedule
sessions at your convenience.
